Oct. 27, 2021 – Pawfficer Howie, the officer wellness and community service dog for the Oak Park Police Department, has a new social media presence on Instagram.
Residents can follow @pawfficer_howie to get a behind-the-scenes look at the life of the therapeutic service dog and receive public safety information from the Police Department through the voice of Howie.
Howie has undergone more than 1,250 hours of service training with SIT Service Dogs to assist with officer wellness, help with victim comfort services for traumatic incidents and increase community engagement at public events.
The 2-year-old Labrador/St. John’s Water dog resides at the Police Department and a rotation of trained employees are responsible for his care. He joins officers and non-sworn staff at community events to help bring awareness to the many outreach programs the police department offers like the Residential Beat Officer Program.
