Dec. 4, 2024 – The Village of Oak Park and the Oak Park Police Department have announced that Funeral services for fallen Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins will take place next week on Dec. 11-12, and a candlelight vigil will occur this week on Fri., Dec. 6, the one week-anniversary of his death. Reddins, a Chicago native, was killed in the line of duty on Fri., Nov. 29, when responding to a call.
Locally, the candlelight vigil will take place in Oak Park on Fri., Dec. 6 in the courtyard at Village Hall (123 Madison St.) beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m. The vigil will include remarks from Police Chief Shatonya Johnson, Village President Vicki Scaman and others.
Family and friends will gather on Wed., Dec. 11 at Leak & Sons Funeral Home (7838 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago, IL 60619) for a visitation from 1 – 8 p.m. A police officer walk through is expected to take place at approximately 6 p.m. for members of the Oak Park Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and first responders.
On Thurs., Dec. 12, a wake begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Apostolic Church of God (6320 S. Dorchester Ave., Chicago, IL 60637) in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. A private burial will follow.

Reddins was shot Friday after responding to a call of a person observed with a gun leaving the Chase Bank in the 1000 block of Lake Street. He was taken to Loyola Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. Reddins’ death is the first in the line of duty of an Oak Park Police Officer since 1938; he had been a member of the department since 2019.
On Saturday, 37-year old Jerell Thomas, was charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office with first-degree murder in connection with the line-of-duty death, as well as attempted murder of a peace officer, possession of a stolen firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Thomas, a Chicagoan, is slated to be in court at the Fourth Municipal District in Maywood on Thurs., Dec. 5 at 11 a.m.
