Bicycle safety is focus of Oak Park Move with the Mayor event

* May 14 Event Update *

Due to today's forecast that calls for inclement weather, the Move with the Mayor events scheduled outside at Village Hall for May 14 have been postponed.

Move with the Mayor will take place from 11:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday, May 19 at Rehm Park as part of the Collaboration for Early Childhood's Blast Off to Kindergarten event.

The Move with the Mayor activity will include an interactive family dance activity with Kuumba Kids.

The Oak Park Department of Public Health is working to coordinate a separate bike safety event featuring a bike rodeo and free bike helmet giveaway. More information will be shared on this page and on the Village's social media channels as it becomes available.

May 2, 2024 – Community members are invited to hop on their bikes and ride to Village Hall for Oak Park’s second annual Move with the Mayor event.

Village President Vicki Scaman will join Village staff in giving away free bicycle helmets during the family-friendly celebration from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tues., May 14 in the parking lot at Village Hall, 123 Madison St.

“I’m thrilled to bring Move with the Mayor to life once again here in Oak Park,” said Scaman. “Last year’s inaugural event for us was a great success and I have no doubt that year two will make just as positive of an impact on the community. One of our adopted board goals is community health and safety, prioritizing the need to provide for safe mobility. As we continue to work toward that end and our Vision Zero plan, I know that this event will be a great way to further shine a light on those important initiatives.”

Bicycle safety is the primary focus of this year’s Move with the Mayor event in Oak Park. In addition to the bike helmet giveaway, attendees will be able to participate in a mini bike safety rodeo facilitated by a certified instructor from the League of American Bicyclists. This year's event will once again feature a visit from Kuumba Kids Dance for an audience-participation activity on the south lawn.

The free helmets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Free stickers will also be available so participants can customize and decorate their helmets.

Additionally, attendees will be able to gather information about bicycling in Oak Park, including locations of bike-parking shelters, free bike fix-it stations and bike-safe routes in the Village.

Kuumba Kids is a diverse and inclusive Oak Park dance company whose mission is to utilize dance, song and music as an educational tool to bring awareness and knowledge of the African Diaspora while inspiring self-confidence, development, discipline and respect for everyone.

Move with the Mayor is a national initiative that works with leaders across the country to challenge their communities to be more physically active. Mayors encourage their communities to be physically active to lower their chances of heart disease and its risk factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.
