May 22, 2015 – Oak Park Police are investigating an apparent home invasion early Thursday evening in the 1000 block of South Oak Park Avenue.
Officers responding to a 911 call at about 6:40 p.m. were met by a 27-year-old woman who said a man had forced his way into the home, assaulted and bound her before fleeing with $25 in cash.
She was able to free herself and call 911.
The victim told police her assailant knocked on the door, asked for a name she did not recognize and then left. He returned a few minutes later and tried to engage her in conversation. She said when she attempted to close the door, the man forced his way inside and displayed a handgun.
The victim, a Chicago resident who said she was housesitting for a coworker, was transported to Rush Oak Park Hospital where she was treated and released later the same evening.
Initially, she could only describe her assailant as an African American male, but Police are hopeful she will be able to provide more details as the investigation proceeds.
Investigators spent several hours at the home Thursday evening gathering evidence and talking to neighbors.
“Crimes of this nature are unusual,” said Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley. “Police rely on residents to be the extra eyes and ears that can help keep our community safe from criminals. Neighbors who are quick to call 911 when they see suspicious activity or persons are essential to fighting crime.
“Given the time of day and location, someone may have seen the assailant whether they know it or not,” Tanksley added. “That’s why we are urging everyone to think back to yesterday and try and recall anything or anyone that didn’t quite fit in with the rhythm of the neighborhood. Small details could be the key.”
