Jan. 9, 2025 - On the morning of Nov. 29, 2024, Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call involving an armed offender. The Village of Oak Park extends its deepest condolences to Detective Reddins’ family, friends and colleagues within the Oak Park Police Department, and the wider law enforcement community, as they continue to process the grief caused by this senseless act of violence.
In order to be responsive to multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and media inquiries received by the Village of Oak Park and the Oak Park Police Department, the Village today released footage from five (5) body-worn cameras (BWC) from several officers and sergeants who were on the scene that day, including Detective Reddins. The footage includes distressing and graphic content related to Detective Reddins being shot and killed in the line of duty.

On Nov. 30, 2024, Jerell Thomas of Chicago was charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office with first-degree murder in connection with Reddins’ death. Since being indicted, Thomas is now facing up to 56 felony charges including attempted murder of a peace officer, possession of a stolen firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He remains in custody and is due to appear next in the Circuit Court of Cook County on March 4 for a court status.
