Focusing on men's mental health

Dec. 3, 2024 - Men’s mental health matters, and the Village is working with community partners to to break the stigma around the topic.

Many men face pressure to “stay strong,” but officials say seeking help is one of the strongest actions men can take. Here’s how you can support a friend, colleague or family member:

  • Be an active listener: Let them talk without interruptions or judgment. Sometimes, just being there is enough.
  • Recognize warning signs: Changes in mood, withdrawing from loved ones, or expressing hopelessness may indicate they need support.
  • Challenge stigma: Encourage open conversations about mental health. Remind them it's okay to not be okay.
  • Take action in a crisis: If someone talks about harming themselves or shows signs of an emergency, call or text 988 for free, confidential support.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or Thrive Counseling Center Crisis line 708.383.7500 Option 1 in Oak Park, provides judgment-free, 24/7 support to anyone in need, including those experiencing a crisis or their loved ones.

The Village is partnering with Thrive Counseling Center and other community partners to host an event focused on men’s mental health.

The panel discussion will feature an honest conversation about barriers to accessing care and how to support mental wellness among men from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Willard Elementary School, 1250 Ashland Ave. in River Forest.

Panelists with a range of experiences will discuss tools and resources to help men navigate their mental health and wellness.
