Oak Park Police Department response near Oak Park River Forest High School

Last updated - Feb. 14 at 2:15 p.m.

Feb. 14, 2024 – The Oak Park Police Department was notified shortly before noon today by school officials that Oak Park River Forest High School had been placed on a soft lockdown (Secure and Teach) due to reports of an unknown student claiming to have a gun and intending to shoot inside the building during the class period that was underway at the time. Oak Park Police Officers remained on standby near the school, but were not requested to enter the building. OPRF officials soon deemed that it was not a credible safety threat and lifted the lockdown at approximately 12:29 p.m.

Approximately 10 minutes later, Oak Park Police Officers responded to the high school for a separate call of shots fired. A second soft lockdown was instituted following the call at 12:39 p.m. Following an investigation and search, it was soon determined that this was not a bona fide situation of shots fired. The second lockdown concluded at approximately 1:49 p.m.

Police closed Lake Street and Scoville Avenue near the school as a means to control traffic, however there are no perceived threats or danger in the area at this time.
