March 1, 2023 - Results of the most recent National Community Survey continued to demonstrate that Oak Park residents feel a strong sense of community, while also pointing toward an opportunity for growth in the area of community safety.
The survey, which polled a statistically valid random sample of Oak Parkers by mail last fall, reported that 9 in 10 residents rate Oak Park as an excellent or good place to live and would recommend living in the Village to someone who asks.

The latest survey found that three-fourths of respondents plan to remain in Oak Park for the next five years, and roughly 8 in 10 participants say Oak Park does a good job attracting and valuing residents from diverse backgrounds.
While community members generally feel safe in Oak Park, declining ratings in this area indicate an opportunity for growth.
Safety remains a top priority for residents, with 96 percent rating it as an essential or very important focus area for the Village in the next two years.
About 6 in 10 gave excellent or good reviews to the overall feeling of safety, a decrease of roughly 15 percent from the 2019 survey results. However, 9 in 10 reported feeling safe in their neighborhood and in Oak Park’s downtown/commercial area during the day, which is similar to the 2019 results.
Officials say the purpose of the surveys is to help policy makers better understand priorities for government action and citizen opinions on quality of life and public services.
The survey was conducted by Polco (formerly the National Research Center), a social science research firm that specializes in gathering and analyzing information for public sector entities, including local governments, non-profit agencies and foundations.
Through its collaboration with the International City/County Management Association, Polco has developed a national database of community surveys and responses, which allows the Village to compare many of its results with those from similar communities in Illinois and across the country.
The National Research Center assisted with surveys here in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, standardizing questions for accurate comparisons of findings over the years.
