March 3, 2022 – The public input phase of Oak Park’s comprehensive community safety study will begin this month with a series of community meetings where residents can weigh in on ways the Oak Park Police Department can improve how equitably it delivers services.
Led by national consultant BerryDunn, the meetings are part of a larger community safety assessment commissioned by the Village Board to examine several aspects of local policing including overall operations, internal and external race equity issues, the Department’s response-to-calls-for-service model and how other communities address policing equity issues.
The first community meeting will be held online from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 10. The meeting will be held virtually and focus on police operations. Anyone with feedback or ideas about the Oak Park Police Department is encouraged provide input by joining the Zoom link at https://oak-park-us.zoom.us/j/81224547596, meeting ID 812 2454 7596.
The second meeting will be held in person from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16 in the North Cafeteria at Oak Park and River Forest High School, 201 N. Scoville Ave. The meeting will focus on the Police Department’s calls-for-service model and police operations.
A similar meeting focusing on the calls-for-service model will be held virtually from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 23 the Zoom link at https://oak-park-us.zoom.us/j/81670546427, meeting ID 816 7054 6427.
In addition to attending community meetings, residents are encouraged to provide feedback directly via a dedicated web portal at www.oak-park.us/policeassessment. The site includes a race equity survey, a space to provide feedback about the Police Department, links to the virtual meetings being held on Zoom and more.
The public input phase of the assessment is just one part of the overall project. BerryDunn staff also is digging deep into administrative functions, management approaches and other internal operational aspects of the Oak Park Police Department.
The project is expected to continue into the late summer or early fall, when a report will be presented to the Village Board.
