February at the Conservatory

The Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield St., offers a wide range of programs for kids, families and avid gardeners. The Conservatory is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday. Here are a few of the upcoming events and activities:

Happy bird day celebration…Join a happy bird day open-house celebration with George, the Conservatory’s resident yellow-headed Amazon parrot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sun., March 2. The free family event will include educational activities such as exploring a tropical rain forest and other eco-climates. Call 708.725.2400 or visit www.fopcon.org for details.

Advanced gardening…The Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield St., offers a variety of winter workshops approved for continuing education credit by University of Illinois Extension-Cook County Master Gardeners. Classes include terrarium construction, advanced terrarium building, worm composting, vegetable gardening, seed starting and beekeeping. Visit www.pdop.org for more information.  

Counting birds…Examine the roles birds play in the environment from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday in February as the Conservatory is transformed into an aviary.

Build a succulent garden…Learn about cacti and succulents, see how simple they are to grow and nurture and create a garden to take home. The class is scheduled for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Mon., Feb. 17. Fee is $26 for residents and $39 for non-residents. Register for classes at www.oakparkconservatory.org  

Toddler exploration…Parents with toddlers are invited to explore the wonders of nature from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., Fri., Feb. 21. Space is limited to 15 children and their caregivers. Call 708.725.2400 for more details.

Second Sunday tour…Azaleas, cyclamens and cinnarias will be featured at this month’s docent-led tour from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Sun. Feb. 9. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for children. To reserve a space, call 708.725.2461.
