Aug. 24, 2020 - The Oak Park Police Department’s residential beat officers are rolling out a new Bike the Beat community policing initiative with the goal of engaging with residents while staying socially distanced and outdoors.
The RBOs will be biking each beat, or zone, in a 3-4 hour time frame to create a dialogue with residents throughout the area.
Officers will ride as a group along the streets, stopping at fields, parks and playgrounds. They will be available to meet with new residents, answer questions about the community, listen to feedback and even register bikes on-site.
The program is slated to run this fall and return next spring. It will serve as another tool to help maintain community engagement between the Police Department and Oak Park residents.
Oak Park’s residential beat officers are part of the Community Policing Unit.
RBOs hold regular virtual meetings in the neighborhoods they serve to discuss issues, report on crime trends and crime prevention tips, and answer questions. They provide helpful, practical information for residents in a monthly newsletter via email.

The next Bike the Beat will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 in zone 8. All events are weather permitting.
A map of each zone with contact information for the RBOs is available here. If you'd like officers to stop by your home, send your RBO a text.
