June 16, 2023 – The GreenTown Climate & Equity conference is being held June 22 at Triton College in River Grove, Ill., and the Cross Community Climate Collaborative (C4) will be celebrated during the event by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America.
The Village of Oak Park is serving as the lead community sponsor for the GreenTown conference, which offers the opportunity for communities across the Chicago metropolitan area to come together to tackle climate change, promote equity and achieve sustainability outcomes.
The day’s agenda covers a broad range of topics, including energy, transportation, waste management, workforce development, water conservation, technology innovation and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. Village President Vicki Scaman, Chief Sustainability Officer Marcella Bondie Keenan and Public Health Director Dr. Theresa Chapple-McGruder are among those scheduled to speak and present during the conference. Many other leaders with ties to the Village will be attendance to hear from inspiring speakers, learn case studies and discuss actionable steps to address climate change, economic development and social equity. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Tony G. Reames, Deputy Director for Energy Justice at the U.S. Department of Energy.
At the heart of the event is C4, which was established through a memorandum of understanding signed by Scaman and more than a dozen mayors in Cook County. C4's mission to advance sustainability will be a key focus of the conference.
During the GreenTown Conference, C4 will be recognized during a news conference as the top “small city” award winner of the $125,000 Childhood Obesity and Environmental Health and Sustainability Grant from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America. The Cross Community Climate Collaborative (C4) is a project of co-lead organizations Seven Generations Ahead and the Urban Efficiency Group and the mayors of Oak Park, Broadview and River Forest designed to bring together BIPOC and non-minority communities across income lines to share ideas, secure resources, and drive large-scale projects within and across communities that achieve greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions reductions, equity and sustainability goals.
The project currently supports 14 disinvested and resourced communities in Illinois through a unique mayoral collaboration that prioritizes replicable projects, outcomes and metrics on a timeline in relation to the climate crisis, equity and sustainability. Click here for more information about C4.
