Aug. 27, 2015 - As summer winds down and the Labor Day holiday weekend approaches, the Oak Park Police Department will join law enforcement agencies across Illinois in targeting impaired drivers. The enforcement campaign runs from Aug 24 through Sept. 7 as part of the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown on those driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
Police will have extra officers out on patrol and will conduct roadside safety checks during the campaign. In addition, motorists who do not wear a seat belt can expect a ticket.
"Too many people think their actions don't affect anybody else," said Deputy Police Chief Anthony Ambrose. "But they do it anyway, and they make those decisions as if statistics just don't apply to them."
Of the 10,076 people killed in impaired-driving crashes in 2013, 65 percent were drunk drivers themselves. Oak Park police intend to do everything they can to counter this preventable crime.
To avoid a potential crash or an arrest for driving under the influence, the Oak Park Police Department recommends designating a sober driver and not letting friends or family members drive drunk or impaired. Other important tips include:
The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is a national campaign launched in 1999 to raise awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence. The program supports high-visibility enforcement and public education, focusing on the busiest travel times of the year such as Labor Day.
