Nov. 3, 2021 – The Oak Park Department of Public Health is working with local public and private school officials to set up a series of COVID-19 vaccine clinics beginning next week for children ages 5 to 11 now that pediatric doses have been granted federal approval.
To help meet the anticipated demand for pediatric vaccine doses, the Health Department will host vaccine clinics at all eight of Oak Park’s public elementary schools as well as a separate clinic for children enrolled in Oak Park private schools and kids who live in Oak Park and are home schooled or attend private schools elsewhere.
The pediatric vaccine clinics at Oak Park Elementary School District 97 facilities are scheduled for the following dates:
All of the District 97 clinics will be held from 4:30 to 9 p.m.
The Health Department will also planning to host a clinic for private school and home school students, with first doses administered Nov. 13 and second doses administered Dec. 4. On both dates the clinic will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Oak Park River Forest High School.
Information about how to sign up for an appointment will be provided to parents by their respective schools.
Sixth graders who are 11-years-old and attend Brooks Middle School and Julian Middle School will be instructed to sign up for a clinic at their neighborhood elementary school.
Parents whose children are home schooled or attend a private school outside of Oak Park can email covid19vaccine@oak-park.us for assistance scheduling an appointment.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is administered as a two-dose primary series, three weeks apart, but is a lower dose (10 micrograms) than that used for individuals age 12 and older (30 micrograms).
Children registered for vaccine clinics hosted by the Health Department will be automatically registered for their second dose at the same time and location they receive their first dose.
When returning for the second dose, be sure to bring your vaccine card and the registration QR code sent following the first appointment.
A parent or guardian is required to be present at clinics hosted by the Oak Park Health Department.
COVID-19 vaccines for children and adults are also widely available at most national pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens and Jewel-Osco and through many healthcare providers.
Health officials recommend vaccination for everyone age 5 and older. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is safe, easy and free.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s authorization for the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children age 5 to 11 marks an important milestone in the fight against COVID-19 as it allows a vulnerable population to gain the protection provided by the highly-effective vaccines that until now had only been available to individuals age 12 and older.
